Good morning my loyal Painkillers, anime fans, and newbies to the site. Welcome to another edition of Saturday Morning Cinema. For today’s movie, I figured that it was time to dive into one of the Yugioh movies. And by Yugioh, I mean the original Yugioh series,( not the zero series, come to think of it, I don’t know if that series had any movies.) Anyway, its time to dust off your duel disk, redo your dueling deck, since most of your old cards are on the limited/forbidden list, and let’s watch Yugioh The Movie: Pyramid Of Light.
The movie takes place between season 3 and season 4 of the series, right after the Battle City Tournament. The movie opens up with Seto Kaiba. After suffering another defeat by the hands of Yugi Muto in the Battle City Tournament, Kaiba is spending his time running scenarios to figure out how to beat the three Egyptian God cards that Yugi has. Kaiba eventually tracks down Pegasus, and challenges him to a duel, believing that since Pegasus created the game, that he made a card that was capable of beating the God cards. Meanwhile, Yugi is dealing with the aftermath of being the number one duelist in the world. Every duelist thinks that they are capable of beating Yugi and his God cards. They try to challenge him, but Joey steps in, to allows Yugi to escape. This leads Yugi to the local museum, that has a new Egyptian exhibit that has the mummy of a Pharaoh named Anubis, the Egyptian Lord of the dead. What does Anubis have to do with all of this? You have to watch the movie and find out for yourself.
This movie is what it is. It got a lot of bad reviews from the critics, but the movie is not for them. If you are a Yugioh fan, then this movie is for you. At best the movie feels like a few good episodes that are stringed together. At worst, it a filler chapter that bridges season 3 and 4. If you haven’t seen this movie before, or want to watch it again, you can find it on Hulu, and enjoy. Until next time everyone!
