It’s Sting! Sting Is Here!!

So did everyone enjoy Raw’s 25th
anniversary show last week?

I don’t know if I did or not, since I’m writing, this week’s in advance. Now I’m wondering if guys like Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, Diamond Dallas Paige, or Sting was there. If not, well the Captain is here to give you a game that should give you some more wrestling nostalgia. You guys know the drill, grab your buddy, hook up your N64, and it’s time to play WCW Vs NWO World Tour.

This game came out in 1997, the perfect time for it, since WCW was the most popular wrestling company during this time, beating the WWF in the ratings every Monday night. This game is very easy to pick up and play, and also this is the game that THQ came up with that revolutionary grappling system, that they made better and kept using even when they were making WWE games.

Like many wrestling games during this time, you get your choice of match types, such as single, tag, battle royal, and and a few others. The game is really easy to pick up and play. Basically you have to wear down your opponent’s sprit meter, while your meter raises. Once your meter is full, it will start to flash special. Now you are able to unleash your finishing move, and hopefully put your opponent down for the count, or make them submit.

Another cool thing about this game is the roster. Not only do you get the WCW and the NWO rosters, you also get the fictional promotion rosters of Dead or Alive Wrestling and Independent Union. There was something about some of the characters on these rosters that I found odd as a kid, and as I was researching the game for this post, it confirmed my suspicions. Some of these characters such as Black Belt, and Saladin, are based off of real wrestlers. Black Belt is Taka Michinoku, which by the way was is the WWF/E at the time of this games release, and Saladin is none other than Abdullah the Butcher. Hell there is even an unlockable character name Joe Bruiser, that is supposed to be the late great Mohammed Ali. Just like the songs that they ripped off for entrance music for the wrestlers at shows, I’m pretty sure that Taka, Ali, and Abdullah didn’t get a check for their likeness being used in this game.

Anyway, the game is fun. You and your buddy will enjoy this for hours playing through the different match types, and all the different characters that you can play as. So until next time my Painkillers, enjoy the rest of your Monday.
