Hallowed Be Thy Game Pt. 4

You’ll like Dante, he’s HELL-arious!

They say that only the good die young.

They also say you’re not supposed to stick your tongue in an electrical outlet but here we are..

Anyway.

Dante’s Finerno! I mean inferno! Steeped in a delicious broth of historical innacuracy and religious allegory; this action-adventure title from eels-slippery-2.jpgEelectronic Arts brings a fresh twist to an olde tale.

The original iteration documents the journey of titular author Dante Alighieri as he makes his way through the various layers of hell. The videogame adaptation, while staying true to this– takes several artistic liberties. For instance: Dante is not just a poet, but a crusader in the service of God. For a dash of the theatrical, Dante’s betrothed is taken prisoner by Satan as punishment for the many atrocities commited by him in the lords name. Defying death itself apparently is not without its price.

Redemption is sweaty business

So now that we’ve established motive, its easy to imagine what comes next: A swath of destruction and violence nine layers deep baby! Armed with Death’s very own Scythe, Dante begins his plunge into the void, face first.

Along the way, he crosses paths with various demonic entities. Each, a damned soul themed to be unique to the specific circle of hell in which they’re encountered.

Gameplay is very reminiscent of titles such as Devil May Cry and the PS2 era Castlevania entries. Your typical hack n’ slash 3D platformer with stylish combo-centric combat. Nothing terribly noteworthy here in my Frank opinion, but a fun jaunt none the less.

What really drew me in here was the atmosphere of the whole experience. To this day I clearly remember how it began for me. The advetising for this title was spot on. A commercial dipicting our heros roar; a torrent of rage and sorrow as his beloved Beatrice is pulled into the maw. All set to the dulcet tones of Bill Withers’ classic ‘Aint No Sunshine’.

My god.

In the end, I highly recommend adding this often overseen gem to your collection. You can find it on both Sony’s Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360 so I’m sure availability won’t cause you much gripe~

Stay tuned for the next installment of HbtG coming soon, as well as a few treats coming to the YouTube channel within the next week or so.

Until then!

We’re Adjourned~
