If I were to ask you what your favorite anime was, I’m pretty sure that I would get a range of answers from DragonBall, Naruto, and Inuyasha to Attack on Titan, or maybe even One Piece. Hell my wife loves Sailor Moon, and that show plus all the other shows I named are all damn good shows in their own unique way.
The issue with all of these shows are they are so damn long. Now again, don’t get me wrong, cause I love the entire DragonBall series, but I still have a season and a half of DragonBall Super to watch, and April of 2018 can’t get here fast enough for season three of Attack on Titan to get here. (I think that was the the month and year). So instead of binge watching hours and hours of these long anime series, I’m here to give you some short and sweet anime series that you can watch the entirety of on your next day off. So let’s start with this space opera/ western: Outlaw Star.
If you are not immedately pulled into this show by its flashy introduction, and great opening theme, then you my friend have not evolved your anime tastes beyond Pokemon. This 26 episode series follows our hero, Gene Starwind, and his young business partner James “Jim” Hawking, on their quest to find the Galactic Leyline. Along the way they run into an outlaw named “Hot Ice” Hilda, an assassin name “Twilight” Suzaka, a bio-android named Melfina, and an alien cat lady named Aisha Clanclan. In their quest to find the Leyline, this ragtag crew must deal with outlaws, pirates, assassins, and many others that want the Leyline for themselves. Why? Well Rumor has it, the Leyline is a holder of immense treasure, knowledge, and power.
The animation is good, the story and interactions between the different characters works really well. I really do like how the secondary characters are used and how they all tie in with the main characters. I don’t want to spoil things for you guys, cause this is something I’d rather you see for yourselves. Older anime fans like myself may remember this show being on the Cartoon Network/ Adult Swim lineup back in the early 2000’s, but if you don’t or are s fledgeling anime fan, I suggest that you give Outlaw Star a shot ,and enjoy.
“Still read me Gene? Just remember, outlaws never go down easy, no matter what happens to them.”
